Daphne Griffith Wakeland passed away at her home early Friday morning after a long illness. She was born January 29, 1922 in Avalon, Texas to J. P. and Essie Griffith. Daphne grew up in Avalon where she graduated as valedictorian of her senior class. She received both her undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of North Texas. Daphne married B. D. "Sonny" Wakeland on August 13, 1943. They were married for 62 long and happy years.

Daphne is survived by her husband, Sonny; one son, Joe Wakeland; daughter-in-law, Debra; and grandson, Joe Wilson Wakeland, all of Waxahachie. She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Jack Griffith and his wife Evelyn, sister-in-law, Frances Jack Simmons, and favorite niece, Jacquelyn Clarke. The family wishes to thank friends and caregivers Elmerine Carter and Carrie Crawford for their love and support.

Daphne's father, who was Superintendent of the Avalon Independent School District, instilled in her a love for education. She taught school in Avalon, Red Oak, Maypearl, Italy, and Waxahachie. She also held the position of county librarian. Daphne retired from W.I.S.D. after 30 years of service.

Daphne loved playing bridge and enjoyed spending time with her friends. Through the years she was a member of several local organizations. She was also a member of Central Presbyterian Church. Memorials may be made in Daphne's memory to the Central Presbyterian Church in Waxahachie.

Visitation will be held Sunday, September 18, 2005, from 6-8 PM at the Wayne Boze Funeral Home with services to follow Monday, September 19, 2005, 2 PM in the Pat Boze Chapel at the funeral hom. Pallbearers will be Dwight Duncan, Jerry Wilson, Sterling Worthy, and H. L Southard. Honorary Pallbearers will be Aubrey Berry and J. K. Wilson. Interment will follow in the Hillcrest Burial Park.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Wayne Boze Funeral Home.
