Van Kent, age 81

Van passed away peacefully at his residence early Saturday morning. Charles Van Kent was born in the Providence Community east of Corsicana to H.J. and Mayfair Jones Kent. He graduated from Mildred High School in 1940 and moved to Waxahachie. He attended Texas A & M and Trinity Universities before entering military service. He worked for several grocery stores and joined the US Army Air Corps in 1943 serving as a gunnery instructor. He was Honorably discharged in 1945 and moved back to Waxahachie where he was employed with Piggly-Wiggly. Van married Jo Nell Homerstad April 24, 1949 in Clifton. He was then employed with Safeway and later HEB as Manager in Waco and Austin. They moved back to Waxahachie where he was foreman of bridge and road crews for Ellis County until his retirement. Van loved farming and ranching always having cattle and horses. Van loved people, which truly showed in his volunteerism with LA Mills and Mt. Peak elementary schools of the Midlothian ISD where he tutored math and reading, and since 1999 Van was the Visitation attendant for the Wayne Boze Funeral Home.

He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years Jo Nell of Midlothian, two daughters; Caia McCullar and her husband David of Denton, Christi Kent of Lewisville, three grandsons; Kent, Jeffrey, and Logan Bell also of Lewisville. Also surviving is one brother George Kent of Midlothian. Preceding him in death were his parents.

The family will receive friends and relatives from 6 to 8 PM Sunday evening in the Chapel of the Wayne Boze Funeral Home. The Celebration of Life will be 10 AM Monday, March 1, 2004 in the Pat Boze Memorial Chapel with Dr. Dave Lowrey and Brother Gary Morgan officiating. Interment will follow in the Norse Cemetery, Clifton, Texas.

Pallbearers will be: Otis Lowe, Johnny Butler, Dan Baucum, Glen Carlisle, Ed Bowling, Matt Runnels, Danny Richards, Kenny Dodd.

Honorary Pallbearers will be: Harry Hitt, Curtis Ray, Rex Rankin, Randy Johnson, Gordon Walker, Mt. Peak School Staff and Students, Sims Library staff.

In lieu of flowers the family request memorials be made to the Church of your choice or the Van Kent Memorial Scholarship fund c/o Gatlin Turk, PO Box 1026, Midlothian, TX. 76065.
