Charles R. Berry
October 25, 1924 - February 20, 2008

Charles Ray Berry went home to meet his loved ones and his Lord on Wednesday, February 20, 2008 in Waxahachie, at the age of 83.
Mr. Berry was born October 25, 1924 to Juanita (Moore) and Carlos Berry. He attended schools in Bristol, TX and later Waxahachie High School, before enlisting in the U.S. Marine Corps. As a Marine, he served during World War II in the Pacific Theater.

Charles married Dorothy Lee Howard on March 21, 1944. As newlyweds, the couple lived at Camp Pendleton in San Diego, CA, prior to Mr. Berry's deployment with the Marines. After his World War II service, Charles and Dorothy raised their family in Waxahachie. Charles became a printer's apprentice at the Waxahachie Daily Light, steadily working his way up in the ranks of the production department at the paper. He went on to greater success in his career in newspaper production, serving as the composing room foreman of the Wall Street Journal's southwest division in Dallas. After 33 years of service with the Wall Street Journal, he retired on January 1, 1985.
Charles and Dorothy were blessed with three children: a son, Charles Howard, who preceded them in infant death; and daughters Beverly King and Sarah Jamie. After 57 years of marriage, Dorothy preceded Charles in death on May 16, 2001.

On October 23, 2004, Charles married Nelda Howard in Tool, TX. He was a member and Deacon at the First Baptist Church of Tool, and a former longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Waxahachie. He was also a hardworking provider and a devoted father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, a loving son and brother who faithfully made family his priority.
All his life, Charles was an avid fisherman and hunter who loved the outdoors, boating, and camping. One of the joys of his post-retirement was summering in Gunnison, CO with wife Dorothy, where they met a group of friends each year to camp, salmon fish, and enjoy the mountains together.
Mr. Berry is survived by loving wife Nelda H. Berry of Tool, TX; daughter Beverly Brimley and her husband Wilford of Greybull, WY, and daughter S. Jamie Klein of Plano, TX; grandchildren Sarah Masterson of Alexandria, VA, Lindsey Browning of Trophy Club, TX, Ashley Klein of Tucson, AZ, and Andrew Klein of Dallas, TX; great-grandchildren Jacob and Jacy Jenkins of Waxahachie and Ava and J. Charles Masterson of Alexandria, VA, and numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by sisters Jean Hilsher of Kaufman, TX and Dorothy Briggs of Waco, TX. Preceding Mr. Berry in death were his parents; his infant son, Charles Howard Berry; wife, Dorothy Howard Berry; granddaughter, Michelle O'Daniel Jenkins; and sister, Fannie Mae Stanley.
The family will receive friends and relatives from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday evening at the Wayne Boze Funeral Home in Waxahachie. The Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, February 23 at 10 a.m. in the Pat Boze Memorial Chapel, with Ed Brennan officiating. Interment will follow at the Hillcrest Burial Park. Pallbearers are Charles Lyon, Paul Stanley, Kenneth Cash, Jim Klein, Andrew Klein, Clifton Browning, and Phillip Brooks. Honorary pallbearers are Bruce Withers, Odis Sessions, Joe Pendley, Elmer Hix, Jim Bland, and Ernie Brewster.
Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association (www.alz.org).
