Cecil Calhoun

Ray Calhoun, 79 of Waxahachie, passed away Wednesday, March6, 2013 in Waxahachie. He was born April 20, 1933 in Carbondale, IL to the late Cecil and Leona Hoffman Calhoun. Ray grew up in Carlisle, Arkansas. He enjoyed being a Ham Radio Operator and learned to play the drums as a teenager. After high school he attended the University of Arkansas and majored in journalism. He also completed a Master's degree in Government. He later attended night school at UTA for many years to earn a Ph.D in Administration. His technical skills and his facility with words led him to the profession of technical writer. From 1956 to 1959, Ray served in the Air Force as a navigator and Captain. Ray retired from Texas Instruments after 27 years of service. The Supercollider project in Waxahachie then hired Ray as a technical writer from 1992 to 1995. Ray enjoyed competing in chili cook-offs and won many competitions since his first entry in 1976. He loved traveling to chili cook-off events most every weekend and has written a cook book containing many of his favorite recipes. Ray became a member of the Ellis County Amateur Radio Club in 1992, serving as Secretary since 2000. He is survived by his wife, Yvonne Calhoun of Waxahachie; also by his sister-in-law, Becky Ellison and her husband, Mack of Itasca. Graveside services with Military Honors will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, March 12, 2013 at the Dallas Fort Worth National Cemetery. www.waynebozefuneralhome.com
