Billy Putman

June 12, 1936 — February 16, 2016

On the morning of February 16, 2016 around 5:50AM CST a kind, gentle man known to us variously as husband, father, grandfather, and Uncle Bill ended his suffering while surrounded by his wife (Cecilia), his children (Jerry, Terry, Tammy, Ricky and Rodney), his older sisters (Dorothy and Faye), and his dog (Buddy).
Billy Paul Putman was born to Dorothy and Sam Putman on June 12, 1936 in Dickens, Texas. He and his twin sister, Betty Pauline Mahaffey, brought the total number of children in the depression era family to five. According to family lore, Billy and his twin were mischief makers and always looked out for one another. After high school, Billy entered the US Air Force and was stationed in Eastern Asia for portions of both the Korean War and the Viet Nam War. He was proud to be a US Veteran and took that same dedication and work ethic with him to all of his endeavors after leaving the service.
Uncle Bill had just recently entered hospice (Charlie Company) at the Dallas
VA Hospital after several years of declining health. Given his many ailments, he was not expected to linger but was promised compassionate palliative care which the nurses of the VA provided in abundance. He had a very good Saturday (February 13th) with approximately 20 family members in attendance while he was cognizant and without pain. Although he had been having trouble eating, he ate 4 chocolate chip cookies from PaPa Johns Pizza that day. And blinked back tears as he hugged Buddy, his rescue dog.
Billy is survived by his wife, Cecilia Putman of Seagoville, TX, his children Jerry Putman (wife Pam) of Oklahoma, Terry Putman of Oklahoma, Tammy Putman of Seagoville, Rodney Coooper (wife Raneice) of Oklahoma and Rickey Cooper (wife Tina) of Texas.
Billy and Cecilia have been blessed with nine grandchildren, some of whom have born them great grandchildren. They are Britton Putman, OK, Brayden Putman, OK, Maegan Osborn, OK, Blain Osborn (wife Cassie), OK, Kendyl Antwine (husband Matt), TX, Tara Cooper, TX, Nicole Parkinson (husband Jason), OK, Dillon Cooper, OK and Katelyn Cooper, OK.
To date, there are six great grandchildren with another due in March. They are Madison Smith, OK, Riley Johnson, OK, Eli Osborn, OK, Hudson Antwine, TX, Aubrey Parkinson, OK, Cooper Eeds, OK, and Avery Parkinson, OK (due in March).
Also surviving Billy are his two older sisters: Dorothy Coez Spurlock of Mineral Wells, TX and Janice Faye Smith also of Mineral Wells. His older brother, Buddy Putman, and his twin sister, Betty Mahaffey, preceded him in death.
During his final years, Billy was a frequent guest of the Dallas VA Hospital. The family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to the men and women of the VA for the excellent care they extended to Billy and for making his dog a welcome guest on so many occasions. They also request that in lieu of flowers, you make a contribution to a veterans charity or other charity of your choosing in Billys name.
