Bettye Meador Menton , age 72

Bettye Sue Meador Menton passed away Monday night at Baylor Medical Center, Dallas, after a long hard fight battling cancer. She was born in Waxahachie to Lewis (Mack) and Dorothy (Boyd) McElroy. She graduated from Waxahachie High School in 1951. Bettye married "Red" Meador October 20, 1951. She was employed for JC Penney and Duke and Ayres 5 & 10 in 1951. In 1953 W. C. Ralston, Ellis County Tax Assessor, hired Betty as a deputy. She was later hired as the Chief Deputy by Mr. Joe B. Merritt. Bettye was sworn into office as the first woman tax collector-assessor for Ellis County on Friday, November 10, 1972. She was a member of the Ferris Heights United Methodist Church, Waxahachie. With the exception of living seven years in Athens, Tx., she had lived her entire life in Waxahachie. She and Fred Menton were married November 9, 1991.
Her survivors include: her husband, Fred Menton of Waxahachie; daughter and son-in-law, Sue and Mitchell Adams of Waxahachie; step son, Raymond Menton and his wife Liz of Ennis; step daughter, Kathy Blackwood and her husband Gary of Burleson; grandchildren, Josh and Tim Adams; three step grandchildren; and one step great grandchild. She was preceded in death by her first husband, "Red" Meador on December 28, 1989; her parents; and son, James (Bubba) Meador on May 26, 2001.
The family will receive friends and relatives 6-8 PM Thursday at the Wayne Boze Funeral Home. The Celebration of her Life will be 10 AM Friday, February 24, 2006, at the Ferris Heights United Methodist Church, Center and Brown Sts., Waxahachie with Reverends John Green and C. O. Jackson of Athens, and Reverend John Shipman of Waxahachie officiating. Interment will follow in the Sardis Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Dan Hardy, LeRoy Burch, Aaron King, Mathew King, Randy Springer, Bruce Boyd, and Charlie Bailey.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Wayne Boze Funeral Home.
