Bettye Lindsey

September 18, 1923 — July 31, 2014

Bettye Lorraine Fuller Lindsey was born on September 18, 1923 to Hiram and Kate Fuller in San Angelo, TX. Bettye spent all of her young life in San Angelo, graduating from San Angelo High School in 1941. She attended San Angelo Junior College where she was a founding member of Lambda Tau Sorority. She met her future husband, William Harry Lindsey of Hamburg, Arkansas, in a Sunday school class at the First Presbyterian Church when he was in flying school at Goodfellow Air Force Base. They were married in Long Beach, California, on January 19, 1942, and celebrated their 72 years of marriage in 2014. In their 72 years of marriage, they made over 20 moves ranging from the West Coast to the East Coast and from Texas to Montana. Their last move was to Austin, Texas, where she died peacefully in her sleep at home on July 31, 2014. She gave birth to her three "only" children, James Otis II, Kate Susan, and Lori Dale, spanning a 16 year period. Also, after their youngest child graduated from high school, they began their world travels visiting six of the seven continents, only missing Antarctica. All of this was accomplished with her having a great fear of flying and heights.Besides San Angelo, the longest period of her life was spent in Waxahachie, TX, where she was very active in the Central Presbyterian Church, several bridge clubs, and was a founding member of a local Mah Jongg group. She loved dogs, chocolate, Mexican food, hamburgers, all sports (but football was "king", especially the Dallas Cowboys), needlepoint, Bridge, Mah Jongg, the traditional family game of "Speculation" (of which she usually won), and the latest technical gadget. But most of all, she loved her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She always tried to have a crispy can full of chocolate chip cookies ready whenever any one was coming home for a visit. She was always there for those she loved and treated them with great fairness. At the age of 90 and in poor health, she still made a point of attending her youngest granddaughter's marching contest. Her last family activities came only 11 days and 4 days before her passing when she attended the "Cousin Camp Finale" and Bill's 95th family birthday party. Bettye was preceded in death by her parents, Hiram and Kate Fuller, her older sister, Kathryn McGill, her older brother, Col. (Ret.) Edwin "Chick" Fuller, and her older half-brother, Joe Fuller. She is survived by her husband, Bill Lindsey; 3 children and their spouses -- Jim and Margie Lindsey, Susan and Erling Holey, and Lori and Craig Simon; 11 grandchildren and their spouses -- Billy and Tracy Lindsey, Carrie and Luke McKenzie, Mark and Carrie Lindsey, Jennifer and Evan Marchman, Eric and Katie Holey, Bettye and David Hobbs, Hillary and Alex Granda, Amberle and Jeff Heath, Lindsey Simon, Amy Simon, and Becky Simon; and 10 great-grandchildren -- J.J. McKenzie, Avery Lindsey, Alex Lindsey, Emily Lindsey, Cameron Lindsey, Kirven Marchman, Dunagan Marchman, Ayla Marchman, Kitty Heath, and Lexi Heath; and 4 nephews and their families -- Alan McGill, Gary McGill, Carl McGill, and Edwin "Peck" Fuller. Bettye was very generous in her giving to many charitable organizations, and any memorials should be given as the donor's choice to an organization that is important to them. Graveside services are scheduled for 10:15 a.m. at the Dallas Ft. Worth National Cemetery on Friday, August 15, 2014. All those planning to attend will need to meet at the visitors center at the National Cemetery by 10:00 a.m.
