Ben Owens, Jr.

B. W. Owens, Jr. Ben Walker Owens, Jr., 83, passed away Wednesday, October 12, 2011 at his residence. B. W. was born July 16, 1928 in Waxahachie, the youngest of ten children, born to Ben Walker Owens, Sr. and Susanna Pearl Goodman Owens. He graduated from Waxahachie High School in 1947 and served in the U. S. Army from 1951 to 1952. B. W. played minor league baseball at the catcher position from the late 1940's into the 1950's. His baseball career included playing from 1948-1949 in Duncan, Oklahoma; Uttmen, New Mexico-West Texas League; 1949 Ellis County League playoffs with the Southlake Feed Mill Team, Waxahachie; and 1950 House of David. He played ball in the U. S. Army 8th Infantry, 4th Division "Bullits" from 1951-1952. In 1953 he played ball in the Detroit Minor League and with the House of David from 1954-1955. B. W. was involved with Waxahachie youth baseball from 1958-1961 as coach/co-manager. In 1961 he was named Little League Manager of the year. B. W. married Barbara McGlothlin on December 31, 1958. He retired from General Motors parts division in 1989 with 30 years of service. He was a member of the Park Meadows Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers and four sisters. He is survived by his loving wife, Barbara; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Sandra and Perry McMillan of Red Oak; and numerous loving nieces and nephews. Services to celebrate his life are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Saturday, October 15, 2011 at the Pat Boze Memorial Chapel of Wayne Boze Funeral Home, Waxahachie.
