Barbara Nell Tenery September 2, 1918 January 24, 2011 Her legacy was that she listened, then gave wise advice from her heart to all those who were in need. Barbara Nell Tenery died on January 24, 2011 after a brief illness in Dallas, TX. Barby was born on September 2, 1918 in Miami, Florida, to Virginia Nell and Thomas Koons. She completed her education at boarding school in Baltimore, MD. After moving to Cambridge, Massachusetts, she met her future husband, Robert Mayo Tenery, MD, where he was attending medical school. They were married on June 18, 1939, then moved to Waxahacie,Texas, just before her husband was deployed to the European front during WW II, as a general surgeon. Here, Barby devoted herself to her family and the Central Presbyterian Church, where she served as an elder and youth fellowship leader along with her husband. She was honored as First Lady of Waxahachie in 1965 for her years of volunteer service throughout the community. After moving to Dallas in 1976, she and Mayo found their new church home at Westminister Presbyterian Church, where she served as an elder, volunteered in the nursery, Vacation Bible School, Women of the Church, Meals on Wheels and North Dallas Shared Ministries. A memorial service is being held to honor her life at the Westminister Presbyterian Church, 8200 Devonshire Drive, Dallas, Texas 75209, on Saturday, January 29 at 3:00 PM. Barbara was preceded in death by her sisters, Bets and Win, and in 1979, her husband of forty years. She is survived by her son, Robert M. Tenery, Jr, MD, and wife, Janet, and daughter, Susan Tenery Carter, and husband, Peter R. Carter, MD, her grandchildren and their spouses: Trey and Angela Tenery, Gene and Robyn Tenery Blakeney, Rich and Mary Carter, and Ben and Tina Carter, and her great grandchildren: Mason Tenery, Riley Carter, Brooke Blakeney, Marc Joseph Tenery, Leigh Blakeney, Harrison Carter, Jed Carter, Clay Carter and Nya Carter. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials may be given to the Westminister Presbyterian Church, VNA Meals on Wheels, 1600 Viceroy Dr., Dallas, TX 75219, or Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children, 2222 Welborn, Dallas, TX 75219.
