Bailey Shafer

October 30, 1944 — October 14, 2014

Bailey Wayne Shafer was born October 30, 1944 in Melbourne, FL and was welcomed into Heaven on October 14, 2014, just 16 days before his 70th birthday. He was the eldest of five sons born to Joseph Bailey Weldon Shafer and Bessie Loretta Oakley Shafer. Bailey is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Joanne Harper Shafer of DeSoto; children, Brian Shafer of Oak Cliff, Lisa Ferry of Maypearl, Jessica and Jason Prewitt of Gary, Texas; grandchildren, Shandlyn Shafer, Austin Shafer, Brianna Chastain, Kailey Shafer, Jacob Prewitt, Jonas Prewitt, Race Ferry, Brian Shafer, and Judson Prewitt; mother, Bessie Shafer of Red Oak; brothers and sisters-in-law, Marion and Gayle Shafer of Mesquite, and Marvin and Patra Shafer of Arlington; and numerous aunts, uncles, nephews, and nieces. He was preceded in death by his father and two brothers, David and Elbert. Bailey was a charter member of New Beginnings Bible Church in Ferris. He loved to sit and listen to hymns being sung. In the last 2 years, his declining health did not allow him to be as active in church activities. Bailey spent the majority of his adulthood working in the field of truck refrigeration. He worked for his father, Thermo King, and then in the 80's opened Shafer's Truck Refrigeration in Dallas. Bailey was a hardworker and never left the DFW area in case of work calls. He instilled in his children the importance of honoring your word, standing behind what you believe, and putting your all in to everything you do. Bailey had a generous spirit and often bought lunch for individuals down on their luck who lived on the streets near his shop. He was often caught trying to slip you a twenty just in case you needed it! Bailey was full of wisdom and loved to sit around and talk. He was always available to give advice over the phone for any given situation. He loved to retell stories from childhood to present, and he loved to harass everyone, but more than anything he loved his Lord and his family. He fought every day the last few years to overcome his health issues and arose victorious Tuesday evening.
