George Alston Ramsey

George Alston Ramsey, age 82, of Waxahachie, died Monday, December 8, 2003 at Pleasant Manor Health and Rehabilitation Center in Waxahachie, TX. He was born on April 2, 1921 in San Antonio, TX. to Lyle Alston and Elsie Mae (Smith) Ramsey. He and his family moved to Dallas when he was eight years old. He graduated from Sunset High School in 1939, having served as Captain of the ROTC.
Mr. Ramsey joined Southwestern Bell Telephone Company in 1939 and later retired with forty years in 1980. He joined the US Navy in 1942 and served as a Gunners Mate in the Pacific Theatre until 1945. He married Mary Gwendolyn Moore on December 21, 1941 in Rockwall, TX. and they would have celebrated their sixty-second anniversary this month. Mr. and Mrs. Ramsey bought a farm in 1963 near Midlothian, TX. where they later built their home in 1971. Mr. Ramsey was a "gentleman farmer" until 1995 when they moved from the farm to Waxahachie. During Mr. Ramsey's thirty years in Ellis County, he was very active in the affairs of his church, Central Presbyterian Church, in Waxahachie. He served on many committees of the church including a term as a Trustee and two terms as an Elder. He was a 32nd Degree mason. Mr. Ramsey enjoyed serving his community in many ways including his service as a member of the Waxahachie Lions club where he served multiple terms as the "Tail Twister."

Mr. Ramsey was devoted to his country, his community, his church and his family. He is survived by his beloved wife, Gwen; son, Mike, and his wife, Bonney, of Waxahachie; two granddaughters, Angela Benkendorfer and her husband, Scott, of Austin and Andrea Prendergast of Frisco; great grandsons, Dax, Brooks and Alex Benkendorfer of Austin and Cade and William Prendergast of Frisco. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Lyle Weston Ramsey.

Alston will lie in state Thursday 8 AM until 9 PM at the Wayne Boze Funeral Home in Waxahachie. Graveside services will be at 10 AM Friday at the Sardis Cemetery near Waxahachie. Memorial services will be at 11:30 AM Friday, December 12, 2003 at Central Presbyterian Church in Waxahachie with the Reverend Vic Dindot officiating. Pallbearers will be Herbert (Bud) Garoutte, John Moore, Roy Crownover, Gene Snyder, Glenn Brooks and Wilburn Berry. Honorary Pallbearers will be Pat McElroy, Chappy Middleton, Steve Chapman, Ron Johnson, Jack Price, David Thornhill, Jim Chapman,
J. D. Atwell and Jerry McDonald.
