Alma Glenn Matthews

Alma Glenn Lowther Matthews was born in Asher, Oklahoma on January 16, 1934, to Alva Lowther and Violet Bragg Lowther. She passed on January 24, 2025, in Midlothian, Texas after a long battle with Alzheimer’s Disease.  She was 91 years old.

Alma started life on her grandparents’ farm in rural Oklahoma.  After her parents divorced, she and her mom moved around southern Oklahoma until her mom married her stepfather, Jerry Pizzi.  After WWII, Jerry moved his family, which now included daughter Katie, back to his home state of New Jersey.  Alma was 10 and would spend the majority of the next 35 years there.

She married the boy next door, John Matthews, and settled in to raise a family.  The young couple welcomed three children: John Gerald, Roger Allen, and Dorothy Ann. Alma was active in her church, Ardena Baptist, teaching Sunday School and organizing crafts until the family moved to Grand Prairie, Texas in 1980.  There she was an active member of Lakeview Baptist Church for many years.  She spent her working life in a variety of office positions including switchboard operator, receptionist, and accounting clerk.  Alma’s hobbies included sewing and gardening.  She also loved traveling with family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Matthews, and son, John Gerald Matthews.  The surviving family include her sister, Katie DiGioia, brother, Dixon Lowther; children, Roger Matthews and Dorothy Morgan; multiple grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Alma was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.  She will be remembered for her creativity and feisty personality.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, at 12:45 p.m. in the chapel of the Wayne Boze Funeral Home, 1826 W. Hwy 287 Business, Waxahachie, TX with interment to follow at 2:30 p.m. in the DFW National Cemetery.
