Alene Whitson Sullivan, a longtime resident of Waxahachie, born February 22, 1932 in Agua Dulce, Texas, passed away at the Ennis Care Center in Ennis, Texas on June 18, 2017 at the age of 85. Alene was the daughter of Albert and Emma (Holly) Whitson and was raised in Agua Dulce, Texas.
On July 15, 1951 in Agua Dulce, Texas, Alene married Cecil Harold Hartsfield, Jr. Together they had three children: Deborah S. Hartsfield, Cecil H. (Trace) Hartsfield III, and Euel H. Hartsfield.
Alene and Cecil moved often in the early years of their marriage due to his employment with Tenneco Oil Company. They eventually settled in Eagle Lake, Texas where Alene worked as a teacher's aide in the local Junior High School. She also spent many years as the office manager for a local doctor.
Alene was widowed in February of 1980, but found love again and was married on October 27, 1981 to Michael Leonard Sullivan of Waxahachie, Texas. They built a home near Maypearl, Texas where Alene loved to work in the yard. The many trees on their property and the flowers that still bloom are the fruits of her labor.
She worked for over 10 years as an office manager for a doctor in Ennis and then worked for several years at Citizens National Bank in Waxahachie. Alene also volunteered regularly at Daniel's Den Ministries and Hope Clinic in Waxahachie. She and Mike were members of the Maypearl Baptist Church where she was an active member of her Sunday School Class.
Alene accompanied her husband on the road when he became an owner/operator truck driver. She even learned to drive their truck and together they logged many miles traveling across the United States and into Canada.
Inspired by her older sister, Alene began quilting late in life and was soon making quilts for family members and friends. She quilted for many years until the onset of Alzheimer's made the task impossible.
Alene was preceded in death by her parents Albert and Emma Whitson and by her brothers Henry and Louie, her sister Modene and by her son, Euel Hartsfield.
She is survived by her husband of over 35 years, Mike Sullivan; daughter Deborah Hartsfield of Houston; son Cecil (Trace) and his wife Kim Hartsfield of Houston; and three grandsons, Chad and his wife Melodie Hartsfield, Casey Hartsfield, and Christopher Hartsfield all of Houston.
Alene is also survived by her sister-in-law and brother-in-law Judy and Kiril Coonley of Falmouth, Massachusetts, brother-in-law and sister-in-law Pat and Janie Sullivan of Waxahachie, and brother-in-law and sister-in-law Steve and Elizabeth Sullivan of College Station, and by many nieces and nephews.
Services to celebrate her life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, June 22, 2017 in the Pat Boze Memorial Chapel of Wayne Boze Funeral Home with Chaplain Sharon Rodgers officiating. Interment will follow at the Waxahachie City Cemetery.
Visitation for family and friends will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 21, 2017 at Wayne Boze Funeral Home.
Memorial donations may be made to the Cure Alzheimer's Fund, 34 Washington Street, Suite 200, Wellesley Hills, MA 02481 or online at curealz.org
Alene's husband and family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to all of the caregivers, both at home and at the Ennis Care Center and Family First Hospice, for their excellent care provided with kindness and compassion.
