Michael Blake Moore, age 65, passed away on Tuesday, May 10th of the year 2022. Mike was born in Waxahachie on April 14, 1957 to Martell and Jean Moore of Waxahachie. Mike was proud of his hometown of Waxahachie and knew the ins and outs of the history.
Young Michael Blake enjoyed spending time outside, and being with his grandparents; especially his grandads Blow and Dewey. His favorite times were when he was on the farm with Dewey where he learned to shoot a gun, drive a car, and raise a calf. He said that he would have moved out to the farm if he could, but he had to settle for the weekends. When he wasn’t on the farm, he would proudly go on adventures with the Boy Scouts of America and go arrowhead hunting with his Dad. Mike graduated from Waxahachie High School in 1975 and became a member of the Waxahachie Rural Fire Department. The WRFD quickly became his extended family and where Mike spent the majority of his time. He met his wife, Debra Curry, at the car wash in 1978 and then Mike, Debra, and Amy (daughter) became a family in a wedding ceremony on May 24, 1980 in the Moore family house. Mike and Debra brought two more daughters, Laura and Karen, into their family in the 1980s. Whenever Mike and his brother, Mark, took over the ownership of Moore’s Ace Hardware, Mike became more active in the community. Mike continued his journey with the Rural Fire Department and joined the Lions Club where he took on countless leadership roles.
Later in life, Mike left the hardware business and joined the City of Waxahachie’s WasteWater Plant and continued to expand his group of family and friends. Mike enjoyed expanding his knowledge of water treatment and became President of Blacklands Water Region. Mike was looking forward to retirement and planning to spend time with his wife, daughters, grandkids and his favorite four-legged best friend, Tye. In his downtime, you could find Mike either sitting in his recliner with Tye watching an old John Wayne western, at a swap meet looking for his next great find, or on a quick road trip with Debra to see a suspension bridge.
Mike would perk up when classic cars and gas companies, Texaco and Gulf more specifically, were brought up in conversation. He had a keen eye for classic cars and could tell you the year and make of the car. When asked how he knew that, he would simply say, “by the way the headlights are positioned and the shape.” Chevrolet was his brand of choice, but he had a special place in his heart for Ford Model Ts and Model As. He dreamed of having a Model T in his garage, but he could never find a “good deal” or was ten minutes too late. Mike and Debra spent many days and nights refurbishing their 1954 Chevrolet Suburban; Mike was quick to say that “it was not for sale” any time discussions of making room in the garage came up.
Above everything else, Mike was a family man. He worked countless hours to support his family’s daily needs and take them on countless vacations: Arkansas ,Florida, Galveston, Austin, Colorado. Even though Galveston has many family memories, Colorado was BY FAR his most favorite place! Mike found a passion for trains, gold mining, off-roading trails, and ghost towns in his visits to Colorado and was looking forward to a trip to ride the train this summer.
Mike was preceded in death by his Dad, Martell Moore, his mom, Jean Thompson Moore, and father-in-law, CD Curry, and his family pets: Ajax I and II, Happy Jo, KC, and Beau. Mike was survived by his wife: Debra Moore; brother: Mark Moore; daughters: Amy (Bob) Jondle of Boxholm, Iowa, Laura (Adam) Lucas of Spring, Texas, and Karen (Mark) Allen of Waxahachie, Texas; grandkids: “Rugrat” Ryan (Shadee), Jon Jon (Kati), Colton, Beth, Paizley, Logan, and Blake; great grandkids: Ri, Rhyder, Kensley, and Nevan; and a plethora of nephews and nieces; and his Corgi, Tye.
In lieu of flowers, we ask that donations be made to the National Kidney Foundation in Mike’s honor. Mike fought kidney cancer for six years and was hopeful in the future for a kidney transplant or advancements in treatment for all kidney disease. Donations to the National Kidney Foundation will help lead this research in his memory.
